ALBERTA LOOKOUTS
RAM MOUNTAIN
.
September 8, 1960: "Fading from the scene is the traditional packhorse which up to now accompanied the lookout man to his post. The department has found that a helicopter can fly in minutes a trip that took the paackhorse a whole day.
One example is Ram Lookout, some 50 airmiles from Rocky Mountain House. A helicopter from the camp ground near Shundra Ranger Station can make the trip in 10 minutes -- pack horses required at least a day.
Perched upon a granite pinnacle at an altitude of 7,100 feet, Ram Lookout commands a view of 400 square miles of timberland, with steep slopes on all sides leaving an area of less than half an acre for the cabin and radio antenna." (Peace River Record Gazette)
