ATHABASKA
Edson Forest
1943: "The two telephone operated lookouts were manned by the same men as in the past. I wish to mention here the good work of Mr. Hendrickson at the Athabaska lookout. He has manned this tower for a number of years, and rarely requires a cross shot to determine the location of a fire." (Annual Report of the Department of Lands and Mines - FY ended 3/31/1944)
1948: "The Athabaska lookout was connected to the lower road by the construction of 3 miles of newly located road, abandoning the old pack trail. This eliminated the old method of packing gasoline and provisions to the lookout by horse." (Annual Report of the Department of Lands and Mines - FY ended 3/31/1949)
1949: "The moving of the Athabaska lookout telephone line is in line with the policy to keep phone lines as close as possible to trails or roads. A car road was constructed to the lookout last summer; although usually listed under maintenance approximately half of the three and a half miles of the line have been set on poles. It is listed under new construction, although it was not authorized as such." (Annual Report of the Department of Lands and Forests, FY ended 3/31/1950)
August 26, 2006: The lookout, Stephanie Stewart failed to call in her morning report. Upon investigation and a massive search, no trace has been found, foul play is suspected.
