BRITISH COLUMBIA LOOKOUTS
PROMONTORY POINT
Fraser - Cheam
May 25, 1951: "Promontory Lookout established in 1948 on the 5700 foot mountain northwest of Lower Nicola has a new tower and building. It is a permanent building of ply-wood construction set on a concrete foundation and anchored securely to the bed-rock with steel cables. The tower and building were constructed late last summer. Promontory Lookout serves the central portion of the Merritt Ranger district with particularly good coverage of the area between Merritt and Spences Bridge, also the Gulchon and Sius Maka Valleys." (Merritt Herald)
July 6, 1951: "Robert Murray of Merritt is on Promontory lookout with his wife and states the new building which resembles a Dutch windmill makes a very comfortable summer home. On July 1st, they had over a dozen visitors from Merritt in spite of the steep, crooked, and rather narrow road to the lookout." (Merritt Herald)
May 31, 1967: "Anyone sighting a forest fire in the evenings or at weekends is asked to alert the round-the-clock fire watcher at Promontory Lookout at Lower Nicola.
The proceedure is for the person to dial 0 for the operator, and simply ask for a collect call to Promontory Lookout.
The lookout is equipped with a radio-telephone. The message will be quickly relayed to fire fighters in the area.
Merritt Ranger Station is manned during daytime and frequently at weekends. But it is possible that a call put through direct to the station after office hours might not be answered." (Merritt Herald)
2007: The lookout dismantled.
