COMMODORE MOUNTAIN
.
September 29, 1950: "A new Fire Tower and Depot are being built off the Grand Falls - Corner Brook road in the neighborhood of Frank Powell's Camp, Birchy. Work commenced on Monday and Manuel Gillam of South Brook is in charge of the job. The tower is being built on a high hill called the 'Commodore' over the western shoulder of which the road passes. The tower location is about three-quarters of a mile to the east of the road and commands an excellent view of the surrounding country." (Corner Brook Western Star)
May 18, 1951: "Dudley Shears of the N.F.P.A. Western Division was in town last week and on Monday made a trip to the new fire tower and depot in the Birchy Lake area. This tower, perched on top of the Commodore Mountain, overlooks the Grand Falls highway for miles in each direction. Indeed, the view ii all directions extends for many miles and it will play a very important link in the Association's Fire Protection system. It is understood that it will be manned this year by Mr. A. Butt of Mount Moriah, who formerly operated a velocipede in the Sopers Crossing section." (Corner Brook Western Star)
1956: "A 50 ft. observation tower of steel construction was purchased for the Commodore Mountain to replace the wooden structure built there in 1950. Due to pressure of work in the spring the tower was not built." (Annual Report of the Newfoundland Forest Protection Association)
