ONTARIO LOOKOUTS
CLARENCE
Larose Forest
August 7, 1954: "Something new in forest protection for this part of Ontario is the lookout tower now under construction in Clarence Township. One generally thinks of such structures as being perched upon a towering hill, a symbol of the forest ranger in the 'big woods' far up the Ottawa Valley and in Northern Ontario.
This tower is a radical change from the ordinary. It sticks up nearly 90 feet into the air above the flat sand country south of Bourget. When the cabin is completed at its top, lookout men will be able to see widely separated centres, including Lemieux, Casselman, Moose Creek, Limoges and Bourget.
Reason for the tower, says J. Leo Mullen of Rideau District, Lands and Forests Department, is steady expansion of the Larose Forest. Though the forest is not in that part of Ontario normally listed as 'fire district', it has achieved such a size and wealth of tree growth that spotting outbreaks of fire has become too difficult for ground personnel. The forest now covers 21,000 acres and the men who watch over it will be able to pinpoint any fires within a matter of minutes and send men and equipment to the spot in short order."
