NEW BRUNSWICK LOOKOUTS
PLASTER ROCK (Secondary)
Victoria County
1921: "This is a 60 foot wooden tower constructed in April 1921 through the co-operation of the N.B. Railway Co. with the Forest Service. This tower commands a large territory and the lookout man reported fires directly to the local wardens by telephone. In one case a fire twenty miles from the tower, spreading from a fisherman's neglected camp fire, was detected and reported and the warden was not only able to reach the fire in time to extinguish the same, but even secure the necessary evidence for prosecution and conviction before the fisherman had escaped from the woods." "One and one-half miles of pole line connecting the Plaster Rock Lookout with the N.B. Telephone Co. lines." (Annual Report of the Crown Land Department of the Province of New Brunswick)
1936: "The Plaster Rock Tower was not operated since the construction of Cameron Mountain Cupola Cabin, but was used for a few days at a time during hazardous periods, when one of the fire Wardens nearby was detailed to man it for observation purposes along the New Highway being constructed to the eastward." (Department of Lands and Mines, Annual Report)
1940: "One old Secondary tower at Plaster Rock was abandoned and dismantled." (104th Annual Report of the Department of Lands and Mines)
1955: "One new addition to the lookout tower system in the Province was made during the year. This was an 80' galvanized lookout tower built by the Fraser Companies Limited on the site of the old wooden tower at Plaster Rock, Victoria County." (119th Annual Report of the Department of Lands and Mines)
1956: "The construction of the 80' steel lookout tower at Plaster Rock reported last year was completed. This replaces the old wooden Plaster Rock tower abandoned several years ago." (120th Annual Report of the Department of Lands and Mines, year ending 3/31/1957)
