MANITOBA LOOKOUTS
LAKE SASAGINNIGAK
.
June 28, 1933: "Heavy rainfall east of Lake Winnipeg during the last few days has banished the menace of forest fires in that area, forestry officials stated today.
The glad tidings were conveyed Tuesday by a carrier pigeon in exactly the same manner that the dove brought good news to Noah on the ark. The bird, flying from the forestry lookout station at Lake Sasaginnigak to the base station at Lac du Bonnet, bore a message telling of a 14 hours rain. Carrier pigeons are used in messages from lookout towers located in isolated spots of the wooded country." (Winnipeg Free Press)
