September 8, 1951: "The Highview tower of which George Layman is custodian, is a new 50-foot trellis steel erection which replaced the former stubby wooden tower.
At the top of the steel ladder a trap door leads into the eight by eight wooden box from which George keeps tabs on outbreaks. It has glass windows on all sides and the centre is almost completely taken up with a compass table.
With this instrument and his detailed maps, George can spot, pinpoint and report exactly the position of any blaze." (The Ottawa Journal)
